MINUTES OF THE MOUNT PLEASANT CHURCH

Bennington Jan. 7, 1855

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Elders:

Eliza F. Fletcher (Folsom) a member of this church, who had for a long time neglected to walk with the church appeared and confessed her sin, and requested to be dismissed that she might unite with the Bennington church, within the bounds of which she now resides. Resd. that her request be granted and that she be restored.

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Henry Bacon a member of this church appeared and confessed himself guilty of adultery, and Session Resd. that he be suspended from the privileges of the church till he gave evidence of penitence and reformation. 

T. B. Turnbull also a member, being accused of a like offence, by rumor, was questioned by one of the session, in regard to it. He acknowledged his guilt, but did not come before the session. Resd. that he also be suspended.

Rachel Batteese having been dismissed from the Pine Ridge church and recommeded to this, Resd. that she be received.

Tomahushi  May 26, 1855

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Alexander and Milton Brown appeared as candidates for admission to the church. After a full and satisfactory examination, Resd. that they be received.

Nancy Frazier appeared and confessed that she had been angry and also had neglected her duties, prayer, etc. Session advised her to commence at once the performances of all her Christian duties.

Ilinowa also a member, confessed that she had sinned in disregarding the Sabbath and neglecting prayer, but giving evidence of penitence, she was restored.

Lucy Vaughn also came before the session as a candidate for admission to the church. But the evidence she gave of a change of heart, session deemed insufficient and deferred a decision in her case till some future occasion.

J. T. Thall having asked a letter of dismission, it was granted, and he recommended to any evangelical church in the limits of which his lot may fall.

Mt. Pleasant  Aug. 5, 1855

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Br. T. B. Turnbull who had been suspended for a violation of the seventh commandment appeared and fully confessed his sin. As he gave evidence of penitence and reformation Session Resd. that he be restored.

David C. Betts who had been a member of the Baptist Church appeared and requested that he might be received as a member of this church. Upon conversing with him it appeared that he was dissatisfied with the preacher of the Baptist church in not communing with other denominations, and for more than two years he had been anxious to change his church relations. Session knowing that he could not be dismissed and regularly recommended by that church, resolved that he be received.

Sally Ann Baptiste, Yoki and Henry Bacon, all suspended members, came before the session wishing to be restored, but the session were not satisfied with the evidence they gave of penitence and reformation. Suspension continued.

Tomahushi  Dec. 2, 1855

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Shulli, a member came before the session of her own accord and acknowledged that she had transgressed the law of the Sabbath, by trading on that day, expressed penitence for her sin and said that she would try to "remember the Sabbath day to keep it holly" hereafter. 

Yoki also a member who had long been astray came before the session and confessed her sin (which was adultery) and professed penitence for the same. Session deemed the evidence she gave of reformation sufficient to warrant them in restoring to the fellowship of the church, and resolved that she be restored.
