Mothers Ancestory

Post by Mary Trimmins » Fri Nov 14, 2008 2:23 pm

My mothers name is Oceanta Rachel Bailess and she was born in New Orleans to Hilda Bailess of New Orleans and Oscar Bailess of Mississippi. Her mothers maiden name was Brewer who was German and I dont have info on the father.

But in the family there are several Oceola and Oceanta's......

We have always been told that the family tradition that the first born to each generation would be named:
i.e. female. Oceanta and i.e. male Oceola.

And we were told there was Seminole heritage in our family.

I live in Palms Springs and the ripe age of 68 and decided to pursue this as we have little no info...as Hilda Bailess kept it quite quiet for some unknown reason...we always referred to her as Scarlett Ohara from the plantation. I guess in her own right she had an embarrasment about her heritage.

How do I start this process of find Who her mother married and how this name tradition started..
