 INDIAN PIONEER PAPERS [IPP]
  aka INDIAN PIONEER HISTORY [IPH]

Interviews that deal with people of all nationalities with first-hand experience of Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory, not just the Indian population.

  • About the Collection

  • Archives and Manuscripts Division, Oklahoma Historical Society

    • There are only two complete bound sets of originals.
    • The OHS index is more comprehensive... listing localities, events, customs, places, people, etc. and makes the OHS set the most valuable.  The best place to view the volumes and to consult the [card file] index is at OHS.  The bound set at the Archives consists of 112 volumes. There is no volume 111. There are over 55,000 pages in this set and over 85,000 index cards, many with several entries.  These interviews include quite a bit of  genealogical information. The set and index have been microfilmed by the Archives and can be purchased.
    • University of Oklahoma (OU) and the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS), Archives and Manuscripts Division indices are different because they were done separately after the volumes were bound. Both sets have card indices, but since they were bound differently, you can't use the index at OU for the set at the OHS Archives.
  • Western History Collections at the University of Oklahoma

    • The bound set at OU has been put on microfiche. It is available for purchase from Norman Ross Publishing, NY.  Per the librarian in the Western History Collections - they have a card catalog of the index on site at the University of Oklahoma, Western History Library.[10-98]

The following index transcribed by Gay Wall - walltribe@earthlink.net (1998-1999) was complied from a microfiche index of "Indian Pioneer Papers Project, part of the Western History Collection, University of Oklahoma" ordered from the  Family History Center (FHC) *.  The number of the microfiche is shown for each volume which can be ordered through the Mormon Family History Library (FHL) for .15 cents per microfiche for indefinite use at the library in your area.

We owe many many thanks to Gay Wall for her dedication to this Project since July 1998.   I hope you will take a moment to let her know how much you appreciate her hard work and dedication.

About the Collection

In 1936, the [Oklahoma Historical] society teamed with the history department at the University of Oklahoma to get a Works Progress Administration (WPA) writers' project grant for an interview program. The project employed more than 100 writers scattered across the state, with headquarters in Muskogee, where Grant Foreman served as project director. Asked to "call upon early settlers and (record) the story of the migration to Oklahoma and their early life here" the writers conducted more than 11,000 interviews, edited the accounts into written form, and sent them to the project director who completed the editorial process and had them typed into more than 45,000 pages. When assembled, the Indian-Pioneer Papers consisted of 112 volumes, with one set at the university, the other at the society. There are only two complete bound sets of originals.
