I am looking for information concerning my grandmother. she was living in the vicinity of Rosedale with her father Henry Burns. also her sister and family. I am looking for a marriage lic. for she and my g-fth. His name was Jacob Bullard. On an old 78 record she tells how she and her family crossed the S. Canadian River. It was very cold. the river was frozen. the wedding was held on the banks of the river. She tells about a hugh bonfire and many wedding guest. I could never figure out why this wedding was out doors and across the river. In researching some old Chickasaw meeting records I found mention that permission had to be given for marriages. I am assuming that this might be the reason. Does anyone know where I might look for a record of this marriage? She indicated that a minister was present and performed the ceremony. We have reason to believe that our Burns may have been Cherokee but cannot find records. any help or suggestions would be appreciated Joyce Bullard Mcentire

Jerry A. Elrod Wed Jul 30 22:01:25 1997
Am desperately trying to find information on a branch of the Elrod family that seems impossible to track. James Minus Alexander married Eliza Ann Powers (dob - 12-25-1863/dod-07- 21-48. Her father was David Powers. Together they had seven children; Willie M.,Charles,John E.,James M.,Henry, Dewey E., and Mable. I have a copy of a letter from Muskogee OK that advises that Eliza Alexander tried to register as a citizen of the Choctaw nation along with her children but was denied by the commissioners on February 15, 1907 who notified her she was not entitled to rights in either the Choctaw or Chickasaw Nations. No reason for the denial was given and the rolls were closed March 04, 1907 and she was not allowed to pursue her case. This letter was written to her daughter Willie Mae Alexander April 24, 1923 when she enquired about the status of the claim. Willie Mae Alexander (Jacks), then a widow, married William Elrod, dob- 10-28-1875/dod 09-13-1918. Mr. Elrod was buried at Kenefic, OK. Willie Mae was buried at Caddo, OK as were here parents. They seemed to pack up and move on the spur of the moment. I know of Electra, TX for sure, maybe New Mexico. In their short time together they fathered three sons,Ray, James, and Joseph, my father now 80 and the only one alive. We think his father was W.(H.arrison) Elrod of Putnam County, TN, even thought he and his wife seemed to move around a lot also (White,DeKalb and Coffee counties). We have been told his father was John Jack Morgan whose mother died of fever on a wagon train or he was illegetimate. He was supposedly taken in by Felli Elrod and Jeanie Thomas (Elrod) Any and all help in solving this riddle will be appreciated. It is very apparent that the four children of Joseph Elrod are more than a little Native American. My grandmother Willie Mae was definately Native American as are the Alexanders in OK we are related to as well as the Powers. We have one picture of William Elrod, we think, on a wagon with James Alexander in Caddo IT and they both were definately Native American. Please write my sister Virginia Elrod, P.O. Box 3599, Eureka CA 95501 or contact me at JAElrod@aol.com

A lot of my family members tell me that my Grandmother ( who died before I was born) was Cherokee, or Catawba, depending on who you are talking to. Having not lived in the Carolinas for many years it is difficult for me to do any first-hand research. I am not sure whether the Catawba are more closely related to the Cherokee, Seminole or some other of the southeastern bands. My Granndmother's name was Lettie Baker and was born in Virginia around 1900-1910 as best I can determine at this point.

LEVI PICKERING,a Methodist-E Minister from east Tennessee, came with his family to Chickasaw Nation,Indian Territory(present-day Carter County) in 1879, but had been performing marriages, some of Native-American couples as early as 1875. I have recently learned he was somehow connected to the Cherokee Nation as possibly an Indian Agent. Does somehow know where I might check to verify this information? Does such a list of agents exist?

Bettie is considered herself the daughter of Chickasaw Robert Howard Love and the slave of Col. Benjamin Love, Margaret Ann Wilson. Bettie sought citizenship "by blood" in 1896 and was denied because of her "African" blood. Bettie's husband, William Hadley Ligon was purported to have been born in MO or TX. Either 1852, 1856, or 1850. He was better known as Hadley and his death certificate states his birth in TX. If you have information pertaining to any of the individuals mentioned, including the slave owners I would appreciate you Emailing me at Estelusti@aol.com

Isaac Christian was born in Missouri according to census records. His wife was the slave of James McCOY a chickasaw. Sally and Isaac were born circa 1840's. Sally also had a son (Jackson McCoy) by a Jim McCoy, thought to be her owner. I don't have much on Sally and would be grateful for any information someone would have on the slaves owned by the McCoy family.

My husband Jon's grandmother stated he father Richard Washington ADAMS was half Native American. I recently found records of his parents, William Hall ADAMS and MARTHA SUSAN HALL. We believe Martha HALL is Native American and was born March 30, 1838 in what is Henry County, TN.(died April 24, 1893 in KY). Can anyone help verify MARTHA HALL as Native American? This is not for benefits as my husband would be 1/16 and son 1/32, but for our own personal information. Thanks.

I am researching my wife's family tree. Her GGrandfather was one TAYLOR LANHAM, supposedly born in Kentucky in 1861. He is mentioned in the book "When Swallows Fly Home" by J.L. Medlock, a history of Center, OK, from about 1900 to 1960. The quotes in question are 1) "In 1893, the Dawes Commission was appointed for the purpose of making a roll of citizens of the Indian Territory. After which these citizens were to be assigned lands as their allotments. ... There were 200,000 claimants but only 90,000 were found to be Indian citizens and were given allotments. Some of the citizens we knew who were affected by the ruling of this commission were: SCOTT, PERRY, TAYLOR and FRANK LANHAM; ... There were others who received allotments, but I cannot recall them at this late date." (p.8) 2) "Our closest neighbor was the Statts family who lived about a half mile south of us. ... They were related to the Lanham family who owned hundreds of acres of those priaries, which they secured as their allotments. There were four of the LANHAMS: SCOTT, PERRY, TAYLOR, and FRANK." (p.16). Does this mean that TAYLOR LANHAM was a Native American? Given where Center is located (Pontotoc County, OK), was he a Chickasaw? I have looked into such Chickasaw genealogy resources as are available on the web and have found no LANHAM's listed anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
