Sac
& Fox |
Both Algonquian, these were separate Tribes at the time of first contact, with the Sauk living in on the Upper Michigan peninsula and the Fox south of Lake Superior. Driven south and west by French and English expansion, they ultimately combined forces.
After
a series of removals to Iowa, Missouri and Kansas, the Sac & Fox were
finally settled on part of the lands given up by the Creeks, between the Cimarron River and the North Canadian, primarily
in Lincoln County but extending into the southern part of Payne County and
the northern part of Pottawatomi County.
