Picture is John Willis Lawley and his bride, Susan Jane Mathis. He was born in Arkansas and she was born in Georgia. They met when their parents settled at Cookson, Cherokee County OK in 1890. They were married in April of 1894 at Braggs IT. They remained at Cookson and lived there until she died in 1947 and he died in 1962. They are both buried at the Levi Cookson Cemetery, between Pettit and Qualls, in Cherokee County OK.

This is Anne Carlile Cookson. It is dated August
30, 1985. I have no idea if this is the birth date or the death date. She
was the mother of Howard Cookson, who was a descendant of Old Man Jack or
Uncle Jack Cookson. Anne died when Howard was a young boy. Howard married
Jewell Blair and their children were Mary Ellen Cookson and Tommy Cookson,
who were both born at Cookson. George and Ellen Stratton raised Howard
Cookson. There was an Ogden Levi Cookson and an Ogden Linder Cookson. OL
was Howard's brother. Anne's mother and father were Bill and Emma Carlile.
This woman looks just like her great-granddaughter, Kellie Cookson! Above information furnished by: < |
This is a picture of Kai Carlile (left) and an
unknown person on the right. Kai was born and raised in the Cookson
Hills of southern Cherokee County OK and later became a local outlaw.
He was shot and killed by Sheriff Grover Bishop in the "thorn thicket"
near Keys OK. He was related to the Cookson family and the Ballew
family from that area on the southern end of the Illinois River (now
Lake Tenkiller). This picture was in my grandmother Gertie Lawley
Blair's picture box. She was b.1901 and d.1981. She and her brothers
and sisters grew up with Kai. Her sister took this picture.w up with Kai. Her sister took this picture.
