DESSIE KENNEDY OBITUARY

Dessie Kennedy, daughter of James and Josephine Turnage was born in Liberty, Missouri on May 25, 1888 and passed away in Woodward, Oklahoma on August 23, 1974 at the age of 86 years, 2 months, 28 days. She came to Oklahoma with her parents in her early years and the family homesteaded in the Bloomfield Community southeast of Vici. There she met and married William E. Kennedy of Smith Center, Kansas who had also come to the area and filed a claim on land adjoining Dressie's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Turnage. To this union was born 4 sons and 3 daughters.

Dessie enjoyed life and lived every moment to the fullest. Her love and devotion to her family was beautiful and her greatest honor and happiness came through the love and devotion accorded her by family and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy retired from the farm several years ago and moved to Woodward where they spent their retiring years. She made this her hom until 1971. Due to her declining health she later moved to the Vici Nursing Home where she lived at the time of her final illness.

On February 10, 1946 she accepted Christ as her personal Saviour, was baptized and became a member of the First Methodist Church of Woodward. She was a member of the Gold Star Mothers' Organization. She expressed her love for others by giving of her time and her services. During her declining years she enjoyed making quilts and expressed the desire for leaving a hand made quilt for each of her 14 grandchildren. This labor of love was fulfilled.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, William E. Kennedy and two sons, Elmer and Walter. She is survived by 2 sons, Alvin of Vici and Amos of Cittronella, Alabama; 3 daughters, Edna Boyd of Vici; Eva E. Bennett of Pleasant Hill, MO; and Mildred Vincent of Oklahoma City; 14 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren; also 2 sisters, Mary Sowle of Woodward and Lulu Bonhart of Tulare, CA, other relatives and many friends.

Services were held Sunday, August 25, 1974 at 2:30 p.m. in the Vici Christian Church. Rev Ira Turner officiating. Interment following in Sunnyside Cemetery. Services were arranged and conducted by Shaw Funeral Home, Vici.
