Return to Family

My name is Kathy Burch Williams from Tulsa, OK.  Four generations of my Burch ancestors lived in Pauls Valley.  My gg grandfather, Jesse Edward Burch, was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  He and his five brothers were cavalrymen in the Civil War and all six returned home alive.  Jesse Edward's father, Joseph Thomas Burch, was captured by General William Tecumseh Sherman's army.  His plantation home was burned and all the family's belongings were burned and/or destroyed.  Needless to say, South Carolina was in dire straits after the war and three of Joseph Thomas' sons left South Carolina.  My gg grandfather, Jesse Edward Burch, was one of the sons who left home in search of a better life for himself and his family.  He first went to Virginia for a couple of years, then on to Collin and Grayson Counties, in Texas.  Sometime in the 1890s, I believe, he settled at Beef Creek, which I think is present day Maysville, and finally settled in Pauls Valley.

Jesse Edward owned a grocery and feed store in Pauls Valley.  His son, Astynax Douglass (A.D.) Burch, was a partner in the store, I think.  I recently received a picture of the J.E. Burch Grocery & Feed store from a distant cousin in South Carolina (attached).

In addition, my grandmother's (Winnie Ruth Carter) father (Robert Winston Carter) and grandfather (James Winston Carter) owned a livery stable in Pauls Valley and later, a garage.  I have tried and tried to find pictures of the livery stable to no avail.  I had a conversation with a woman at the Garvin County Court House who told me the library is the best place to find old pictures.  Sometime when you are at the library, if you have time, I would be ever so grateful for any Burch and/or Carter pictures you might find, particularly if you could find a picture of J. W. Carter & Son Livery.  J. E. Burch Grocery & Feed and J. W. Carter & Son Livery are both listed in the 1909-1910 Pauls Valley Business Directory.

Related families:  Joseph A. I have been able to find so little about my Burch ancestors who lived in Pauls Valley for four generations.  Any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Kathy Burch Williams
