E.H. Scrivner was born January 7, 1855, in Tennessee, the second son of Bushrod Scrivner and wife, Maryann (Snyder) Scrivner. E.H. was one of 12 children in his family. During the 1870's the Scrivner family moved to Paris, Texas located in Lamar County. It was in Paris that E.H. met and married Katherine Elizabeth Crockett, daughter of John Montgomery Crockett and wife Mary (Davis) Crockett. The Crockett family lived in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas.

E.H. and Katie moved their family to the Indian Territory from Texas in 1888 and settled in the Choctaw Nation, on the Red River. There they leased a section of land and began farming cotton. The first year wasn't very good but the following year they raised 250 bales of cotton and eighteen thousand bushels of corn. At that time they were paid forty cents a bushel for corn and eleven cents a pound for cotton. They worked the 300 acres with the help of three colored men.

They moved to Pauls Valley in 1890, leasing seven hundred acres of land from Sam Paul for farming. This was the land where the high school is now located in Pauls Valley. E.H. became a Deputy United States Marshal under McAlester in 1890, and served for six years. During that six years he arrested more men for murder that anything else. Most of these killings happened around Pauls Valley and Wynnewood.

Written in "The Chickasaw Enterprise" newspaper on September 30, 1890, was a notation :

"Deputy Marshall E.H. SCRIVNER received a dressed bag Monday from some admirer up the road."

Written in "The Chickasaw Chieftain" newspaper on January 25, 1894, was the following notation:

"Deputy E.H. SCRIVNER of Paul's Valley and his brother Theo SCRIVNER of Paris Texas, are in the city."

Following his term as Deputy Marshal, E.H. opened "Scrivner Dry Goods Company", located at 106 East Charles Avenue, in Pauls Valley. E.H. and Katie continued farming in the Pauls Valley area and in the Maysville area. During this time their family grew to include 9 children; Guizone, Bessie Lee, Crockett, Henry, Mary, Russell, Helen, James and Theo. They operated the Dry Goods Store until their retirement.

E.H. died in 1944, and wife Katie preceded him in death during 1926. They are buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Several of the children married and continued to live in the Pauls Valley area until their deaths. These would include: Bessie Lee Scrivner who married Roy Henry Lewis; Crockett Scrivner who married Minerva Vieux; and Theo Scrivner who married Maurine Cook. The other children who married and moved to other locations are namely: Russell Scrivner who married Mary Spears and lived in Enid; Henry Scrivner who married Flora Maie Watkins and moved to California; James Scrivner who married Olga Seaholm and lived in Waco, Texas.

Edward Henry Scrivner and Katherine Elizabeth (Crockett) Scrivner were my Great Grandparents. I would enjoy corresponding with any other family researchers.
