Dan C. Boutwell - Mon, 18 May 1998          BOUTWELL
My great great grandfather, Nathaniel BOUTWELL (b. 9 Mar 1825 , d.13 Jun 1897, m. Melissa J. SHEPARD), also fled to Indian Territory from Texas. In Oct of 1862 Nathaniel's cousin, Alexander BOUTWELL(b. about 1825 d. about Feb 1881). Alexander played a prominent role in a tragic event called the Great Hanging in Gainesville, in which 42 Union sympathizers were hanged in Oct 1862. It appears that it was not popular to have the name of Boutwell in Gainesville, TX and surrounding areas. Nathaniel's funeral testimonial implies that he lived in Pauls Valley around 1855 (the testimonial make no mention of ever living in Texas). We find no evidence of Nathaniel ever having been in Texas. All that is known is that Nathaniel's son Loney BOUTWELL (b. 6 Aug 1862, d. 9 Nov 1930), was in Purdy, IT, in 1892. Nathaniel was buried in Leon cemetery in Love Co. Any information of Nathaniel or Loney will be greatly appreciated.
