OLD SULPHUR SPRINGS CEMETERY

The cemetery of old Sulphur Springs was located where the Murray County Courthouse now stands. In 1903, Platt National Park Superintendent Joseph Swords wrote to the Secretary of Interior asking that the cemetery be included in the new Park reservation. The Secretary refused. The cemetery had been in use from 1893 to 1903 and had 115 graves. In 1908, the cemetery was moved to its current location three miles north of Sulphur.  There was already existing a small cemetery at this location with about 6 tombstones.

Below, is a list of those who now rest in the Oaklawn Cemetery who were most likely moved in 1908. There were 94 souls interred that were moved. As Supt. Swords noted that there were 115 graves, then there are about 20 graves that were moved and buried under the name "UNKNOWN" or, some of the tombstones are now unreadable or had no dates of death, or, some of the graves were never moved and are still interred on the courthouse grounds.  These names are listed with those interred in Oaklawn Cemetery.
