File Submitter: Rachell Lindley
Georgiana "Georgia" Lindley was the daughter of Doctor Houston Pharris and Josephine Virgin of Missouri.
D.H. Houston's mother Elizabeth Hattie Golden was Cherokee Indian, but the family had never collected any funds from the Cherokee Nation. In 1905 all of them put in applications to become members of the Cherokee Nation. I have copies of some of those applications. They were all denied, including Georgia's.
It was said that Josephine Virgin-Pharris did not get along well with Harry H. Lindley (Went by H.H. Lindley) that at one point he said to her that he was NOT ashamed of his Native American blood, and neither should be Georgia, to which Jospehine said "then why didn't you marry a squaw and leave MY daughter alone?"
Harry is a mystery to us. One thing about the Lindley Family is that they seem to be packrats back to Harry and Georgia! Which ended up being a good thing for my research.
We came upon a box full of information on the family, including Property tax records on all of the property owned my Harry and Georgia in Rogers Co. OK. There were their returned Checks, letters, photos etc.
But there is nothing to indicate Harry's ancestry. What little I have has been gotten from Census Records, which state he was born in Missouri, and that his father was born in New York and Mother in Kentucky.
I have not yet been able to connect him to his parents in Missouri. He was born in 1858. he and Georgia moved to Chelsea in early 1890's as their oldest child Lou Irene Lindley was born there in 1893.
Lou married DeWitt Clinton Henry, who was of a Cherokee Family of the area. His family ran a bank in Chelsea.
Frank Elliot Lindley married Louella Burton who was from Missouri. They had a difficult marriage and only one son. Frank Elliot at one point left for work and didn't return for months. Soon after Louella and their son Frank Burton packed up and moved to Neosho MO where her family was living. They divorced soon after that and Frank B. had little contact with his father and family, with the exception of Lou Lindley Henry's children. He spoke often of DeWitt Clinton Jr and they remained friends throughout their lives.
here are the notes I have in my family data on Harry:
There is a huge box of items that were owned by Harry H. Lindley in the possession of his great grandson Steven Lee Lindley.
Upon going through the box I found that Harry and his decendants had kept everything from Tax receipts to mortgage papers, and returned checks with bank statements attached.
By going through this treasure chest, I am able to put together several things about the life of Harry H. Lindley.
H.H. Lindley bought land in Rogers Co, OK December 29, 1910. 60 acres for $2,000 from Minnie Bell Williams-Paige and her husband Auson B. Paige.
June 12, 1914 there was a Quit Claim Deed in Claremore Oklahoma between H.H. Lindley and John C. Hogan, guardian of minor Marion L. Sequitchie.
Tax receipts show that the Lindley's owned several properties within Rogers Co OK, Including the Townships of Chelsea, Clarmore and Verdigris.
in 1919 H.H. Lindley was listed as 60 years old on Tax sheet. This would put his approximate B-date at 1859
Tax records were from about 1918-1932 for the properties in and around Chelsea OK.
August 1931 there was a check writted for "Funeral Expenses"
the check was signed "H.H. Lindley" in different handwriting than the others, and below it said "by wife"
I would bet that this would be for the funeral of H.H. Lindley, as taxes and bank statements through 1932 were listed to Mrs. H.H. Lindley.
I know that the Lindley's were a "pioneer" family to Chelsea OK, as that was stated in the obituary of their Son Frank E. Lindley. They were in Chelsea in 1897 when their son was born.
In the 1920 Census for Oklahoma, rogers Co, Chelsea Twp I was finally able to find this family. I was searching for Dewitt Clinton Henry and found directly below he and his wife Lou, Harry, Georgie and Frank Lindley.
Harry looked more like Gary, therefore that must be the reason why I have been unable to locate the name on census rolls so far.
Harry H. is listed as a Manager of a Lumber Co.
In a biography about Josephine Virgin-Pharris, Bev Holderby (Great Grandaughter of Josephine) says that she was told that in later years Josephine went to live with Harry and Georgia for a while, but that didn't last too long. Maybe because when Harry said he was "proud of" his Indian blood, Josephine said "then why didn't you mary a squaw and leave my daughter alone"
We know that Georgia is of Cherokee Decent, I'm still researching the Lindley line to see what I can find
