THEY CAME FROM EVERYWHERE

By Dr. Arthur W. Kennedy

A Social History of the settling of Indian Territory from ca. 1840 through 1950+, this series moves quickly “broad brush” to two particular municipal townships covering some 150 square miles in the East Central District of the State of Oklahoma.  One of them, the home of the author, is Konawa Township; the other, the southeastern part of Avoca Township—the two, separated by a sharp dividing line between the “later” Indian Territory and Old Oklahoma.  In significant detail, all aspects of the settling years—four major migrations into and through the area; the geography, the people, and their social institutions.  Written with many allusions to the United States social history as time unfolded into world views, the particular developments are presented chronologically, with due attention to social philosophy, the churches, the schools, and the pioneer spirit of individuals and families solving their destinies.
