Burton - Hall Families
about 1900

Possibly Cherokee County, OK

The elderly couple, center - front row - above children, is Jacob Silas BURTON and Nancy Minerva CARNES BURTON, my great grandparents.  Directly behind them and on the back row are my grandparents, Virgil Anderson BURTON and Effie Mariah HALL BURTON.  Virgil and Effie lived and died out on a farm a few feet away from the Baptist Indian Cemetery. Many of my BURTON relatives are buried there.  And, as a child, I walked that dusty road, played in a school house next door, and visited the church that my grandparents & their kids attended.  As far as I know, the house/home that Virgil built is still standing.

By 1908 Jacob was "mayor" of Peggs, Cherokee Co., OK.  Virgil & Effie were married 1896 in Klaus Indian Territory, OK.
