Kully Chaha Cemetery |
Hwy. 112 south from Hwy. 271, which you can access from Fort Smith, Ar. When you reach Cameron, turn left, (east) to the old Hwy. 112 and go south. There are a couple of "jogs" to this old two lane road but it eventually takes you through a very small town, Gilmore. Shortly after you go through Gilmore, there is a turn off to the left, (east) and I do not know the lane or street, as you will pass several. We knew where to turn because we pin pointed a blue grey house situated in the north-east corner of the lane we turned onto to the Hall Cemetery. If you want an easier way, take Hwy. 112 south through Poteau. You will see a turn off to Monroe. From Monroe, (which turned out to be a Service Station,) you turn north toward Gilmore, which is the old Hwy. 112. You will pass Double Branch Baptist Church and Vaughn Cemetery on your right, (east side) and reach the area described above to Hall Cemetery. The area around the blue-grey house I mentioned before is probably the center of what was once Kully Chaha. I don't know if the foundations of any of the buildings of the old town exist now. Kully was east of Hill and west of Neff; directly south of Cameron and directly north of Monroe. Hope this helps some. Sorry I didn't see the earlier inquiry. contributed 07-2001 by Lola <coolbreze@cybertrails.com> |

Cemetery adjacent to Ellis Chapel Church - fairly good-sized cemetery adjacent to the Ellis Chapel Church on the outskirts of Wister. Going west on Hwy 270 toward Wilburton, turn north just at the edge of Wister following signs. Headstones date from the mid-to late-1850's. The cemetery is currently being enlarged on its northern and western boundaries. Many of my family are buried there along with numerous other families. John C. Baldwin, Tampa, FL MerfB@aol.com [10-97]
Hall Cemetery (Old) - located on road to Slatonville, leave Poteau on Hwy 112 East, travel Cameron road to Reed Adams Corner, turn east for two miles.1
Indian Grave Yards - Many cemeteries in LeFlore County are known as Indian Grave Yards. Hundreds scattered all over LeFlore County are now abandoned and they are grown up in trees, briars, weeds and bushes. Many have been plowed under and the land is in cultivation or in pasture. An early practice of the Indian was to bury underneath the floor of the home. After death, burial took place as soon as a coffin could be made and the grave prepared, usually on the same day of death. Many Indian grave yards are to be found near or in the yard of the Indian home. This signifies a mark of loving respect to their memory, and one by one as the living pass they will be interned in this plot. The Ward Cemetery near New Hope, the Conser Cemetery, the Fulson Cemetery near Howe and the Page Cemetery at Page are all examples of family cemeteries. Usually well kept and substantially enclosed with iron fences and the graves marked with stones. 10
