- Some of our ancestors married in
adjacent Arkansas and Texas counties because it was easier for them to
travel (think railroad) to adjacent states than to travel to the nearest
Federal Court.
- Prior to statehood (1907), marriages of white citizens, in that part of the known as the Indian Territory, were recorded in the various Recording Districts of the United States Federal Court.
Indian Tribes would not (normally) issue trial marriage licenses to
non-Indians. A number of the court clerk offices contain these records.

year.

Marriage and Divorce
Records:
Marriage bonds, affidavits, licenses, and
certificates were kept by each county
beginning about 1890 or when the county was
created. Many marriages in the territorial era were not recorded, and some were recorded in
county courthouses in Arkansas, Kansas, and Texas. Write to the appropriate county
clerk for information. Divorces were granted after 1907 by the district courts or
the circuit court in each county. You can write to the clerk of the court for
