Georgia Carter, Poteau Delegate, Wins Recognition at Girls' State

Georgia Carter, 17 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Carter of Poteau, received statewide recognition last week during her six-day stay at Girls' State at Chickasha. Miss Carter was first appointed city manager. Later she was elected to the state election board, and before the conclave was over, she was elected as a supreme court justice.

Girls' State is sponsored each year by the American Legion auxiliary to promote a better understanding among the girls of Oklahoma on principles of government and democracy.

Poteau Legion Auxiliary has been sending a delegate to Girls' State for the past several years, except during the war years when it was suspended.

Miss Carter won first during an amateur night performance with a vocal solo, "My Task." She also sang a number during the inauguration of the governor of Girls' State.

The 255 girls attending the meeting this year were taught principles of city, county and state government.

Two delegates at the meeting will be chosen to attend Girls' Nation, being started in Washington, D. C., for the first time this year.

Briefs

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wagener (sic) of Fayetteville, Ark., have been guest of Mr. and Mrs. John Youmans since Saturday night. Mr. Wagner (sic) just recently received his M. A. degree from the University of Arkansas. He left Thursday to enter an army hospital at San Antonio, Tex. Mrs. Wagener will leave around July 1, for the University of Arkansas, where she will receive her M. A. degree this summer.

Mrs. B. C. Tidwell left Sunday by plane from Fort Smith for the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minn., where she will undergo an eye treatment. She is not expected to return home until around 60 to 90 days.

O. G. & E. Office in Poteau installed an air conditioning plant last week. The five-ton unit which cools air with refrigeration coils, was installed in the rear of the parts department and has air ducts leading to the front office.

Loschel B. Hargrove, son of Fred Hargrove of 310 Stone avenue, Poteau, has been assigned to Submarine Group 1, on duty with the Philadelphia group of the Atlantic Reserve fleet. Hargrove is a chief torpedoman's mate.

Arthur Burgess, an employee in the government printing plant in Washington, D. C., since 1930 spent last week end in Poteau. Burgess was with The Poteau News a number of years, and was manager of the LeFlore County Sun, then owned by the East Oklahoma Publishing company, from 1928 until 1930, when he resigned and moved his family to Washington.

Annual Picnic of the Choctaw County club was held last Thursday night. New members of the club were introduced during the formal opening. Ladies day was held Friday for women club members. Golf was played in the morning with a covered dish luncheon being served at noon. Bridge games were scheduled in the afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. George Stephens, Jr. of DeQueen, Ark., visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Farris of Poteau Tuesday, enroute home after a week's vacation in Colorado. Stephens is an employee of the KCS railroad in DeQueen.

The City Hall, one of the hottest places in the city in more ways than one, is being equipped with a new 42 inch exhaust fan, purchased at an adjourned meeting of the council Monday night.

John Qualls, principal of the Tarby school, north of Poteau the past seven years, and who will teach in Poteau Junior college next term, has bought the residence on No. Harper, now occupied by Mrs. Roy Harrison. Mrs. Harrison and two daughters will move into the Charley Lyons apartment on No. Witte.

Mrs. Joe B. Thompson of Ardmore spent a two day visit with her father, A. B. Jarvis of Poteau this week. She was accompanied by her sister-in-law, Mrs. John Thompson. They returned Wednesday.

Ten divorce petitions have been filed this week, according to records in the office of Court Clerk, Jack Huff.

Lawton Man at Employment Office

Marion J. Belveal of Lawton has been appointed veterans employment representative in the state employment office at Poteau. Glen Elswick, manager, reported this week. He started work June 16.

Belveal, who was formerly field assistant of the veterans employment service, has had extensive experience in working with veterans in helping them secure suitable employment. Prior to that he was connected with the U. S. Employment Service and was located at Woodward and Alva. He is married and plans to establish a home here.

Fifty Attend School Meeting

Simpson, Hodman Are Given First Priority

Approximately 50 people turned out for the ___ school board meeting last Friday night and presented their view and suggestion on the Poteau school improvement program.

Given first priorities were Simpson and Rodman grade schools. Ceilings and walls at Simpson are to be plastered, while Rodman is scheduled to have its plumbing improved.

After a survey is made by City Engineer Leo Bes_ plans call for a feeder line to be installed from the school to the main sewer line about a block away.

This extra line will prevent sewerage overflow at the grade school.
