Charles Freeman, 78, of Howe, passed away Friday, June 13, 2003, in Fort Smith, Ark. He was a longtime resident of the area, graduated from Heavener High School, was a veteran of World War II in 1941, served in the CCC Camp on Forest Hill in 1942. He was in the Air Force serving two years in Europe, was an educator for 34 years, teaching school in Sycamore, Kan. for three years; Imperial, Calif. for one year; Westville, for 12 years; serving both as a teacher and principal, 14 years in Coweta where he retired in 1983 serving as a master teacher and administrator. He returned to Howe in 1983 where he served as Bible teacher in the men's class at the First Missionary Baptist Church until recently. He was a charter member of the church. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Saundra Kay Freeman; and one son, Charles "Buzz" Freeman. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary ELlen; one son, Donald Springer of Hurst, Texas; his stepfather, Oscar Beavers of Heavener; two aunts, Willard Rogers and Irene Johnston of Heavener; several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 16 at First Missionary Baptist Church of Howe. Burial followed in Howe Cemetery under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener. Memorial may be made to the Freeman Family Life Center at the First Missionary Baptist Church of Howe. |
