Joe Paul Mathies, 84, of Poteau, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2003. He was born May 31, 1918 at Wister to Paul and Inez Mathies. He graduated from Poteau High School in 1937. He worked for the Kansas City Southern Railroad until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in April 1946. He then attended and graduated from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science and worked for his grandfather at the Miller Funeral Home for several years. He worked for the Kansas City Southern Railroad again until his employment with the United States Postal Service and served 15 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve during that time. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 23 years and retired from the Poteau Post Office in July 1983. He was an avid fan of professional baseball and University of Oklahoma athletics and attended games regularly until his health prevented. He loved and enjoyed all children and was a wonderful grandfather and was loved immensely in return.

Survivors include his wife Trudie Mathies of the home; one son, Robert Thompson of Huntington, Ark.; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Dean Fetzer of Meeker; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and loved ones; and a host of beloved friends.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 16 at the First United Methodist Church in Poteau with the Revs. Chad Fetzer and Larry Gaston officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.

Pallbearers will be Don Hargrove, James Lynch, Bob Cauthron, Ronnie Cofer, Jim DeCamp and Paul Stottsberry.
