Jewell L. James, 79, of Poteau, passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2002. She was born Jan. 9, 1923 at Monroe. She was of the Baptist faith and attended No. 10 Community Church in Howe. She worked as a butcher at Poteau Food Market for over 20 years, baby-sat for many children in her later years and loved children and many of those she kept came to visit her in the hospital and brought her pictures they had colored for her. They all called her Nanny Jewell. She also loved her garden.
She was preceded in death by one son, Lloyd Earl Sloan; her parents, Zollie and Deenie James; two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include three sisters and brothers-in-law, Leona and Elton Teel of Ardmore, Cassie Jones of Oklahoma City and Lebrica and Doug Binns of Poteau; one sister-in-law, Dorothy James of Olathe, Kan.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Archie and Ione James of Meosota, Mich. and Curtis and Dorothy James of Poteau; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and loved ones; a host of beloved friends; and very special friends, the Lloyd Jaeger family of Poteau.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau with the Revs. Jim Cook and Bentley Hill officiating. Burial will follow in
Monroe Cemetery under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
