John B. Weller Wehr

John B. Weller Wehr was born 13 Feb 1849 in St. Clair Twp, Butler County, Ohio to Eli Wehr, (son of Jacob Wehr and Catherine Weaver) and Louvina Catherine Burkholder, (daughter of Joseph L. Burkholder and Barbara Herman). His mother died 28 Apr 1863 and was buried in Hickory Flat Cemetery. The family moved in the fall of 1864 to Knox County, Illinois. His sister, Louisa married a Mr. Reese and another sister married a Mr. Taylor. William Peppers, who married his sister, Amanda, was a soldier in the Civil War, Fifth Ohio Cavalry.

His brother, Jacob Franklin married Mary E. Taylor, 30 Nov 1877; brother, Joseph Ely married Mary E. Tapping in 1887, lived in Cedar Vale township in 1900 then moved to Payne County, Oklahoma and brother, Lorenzo D. married May Binkley and lived for awhile in Crescent township.

John moved to Kansas in 1885. He lived there until the opening for land in Oklahoma. Then John with his brothers, Jacob and Joseph made the 1889 Oklahoma Run from the north line, settling claims in Logan County near Crescent, Oklahoma and all three brothers can be found in the Oklahoma Territorial Census in 1890.

Johns' farm is well improved and is devoted to general farming and stock-raising. Mr. Wehr prides himself on the excellent quality of his stock. Of special interest is a stallion, Knowen, imported from Pekin, Illinois and raised by William Hoagman, one of Illinois' famous horse breeders; Knowen is a combination of Percheron and Norman and a descendant of Louis Napoleon.

Mr. Wehr also imported from Adair County, Missouri, two of the best jacks that old Missouri produces; these were purchased from Dr. W. E. Cheatham, a fancy stock breeder. The jacks are offspring of stock that brings the following prices: animals one year old bring $800; two years old, $900; three years old, $1,400 and four years old, $1,500. The sire of one of these jacks sold last February for $1,000; the other sold for $1,500. Mr. Wehr also raised Poland-China hogs and Plymouth Rock chickens.
