Sparkmans
By OkRnRamsey@aol.com
John Pinkney "Pink" Sparkman and Lula Edith McDonald are my Great-Grandparents.
According to census records, 'Pink' and his mother were born in Mississippi and his father in Alabama. 'Pink' was born on January 18, 1861 and died on June 10, 1928. The places of his birth and death, as well as the names of his parents and siblings remain unknown.
Lula Edith McDonald was born July 12, 1878, in McLeansboro, Illinois, the daughter of Samuel Perry McDonald and Frances Katherine Cottingham. The McDonald family migrated to Van Buren County, Arkansas from McLeansboro, Illinois, arriving about 1892.
The earliest record of Pink and Lula is in the 1900 Oklahoma Territory Census, where they resided in Township 10NR 17E, which later became Stonewall Township. Lula is listed as age 22 and Pink as age 37 and they had been married for eight years. She was recorded as being the mother of four children, two of whom were living.
Lula and Pink had a total of eight children, six of which survived to adulthood. Their last child was born in 1908 and shortly thereafter Pink apparently left the family. He is not listed with Lula, and her six children, in the 1910 Stonewall Township, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma census records. She is listed with the household of the Constable and his wife, as a widow. It is not know whether he died or if they divorced, however, his son, William T. Sparkman, stated that his father "would come back and visit them from time to time". His daughter, Bertha M. Sparkman, also recorded his death date in her Bible as June 10, 1928.
On September 11, 1916, Lula remarried to Charles W. Stringer, a Baptist minister. They had three children: Jesse, Orbie and Ida Stringer.
