MINUTES OF THE MOUNT PLEASANT CHURCH

Tomahushi  Mar. 26, 1854

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Present Rev C. C. Copeland, Modr.

Elders:
N. Cochnauer
Simon Mosely

Wm. K. Stewart, his wife Nelly Stewart and Illinowa, presented themselves as candidates for admission to the church. After a protracted examination, Resd. that their reception to the church be deferred till the meeting of Presbytery at Mt. Pleasant, in May next.

Hoteli who has several times been before the Session, again appeared, and wished to be received to the fellowship of the church. But as she had given her hand and name to the Methodist church she was not received.

Hickman Vaughn a member of this church, who had for a long time live in sin, came and confessed his errors for which he appeared penitent, but the session deferred his restoration to the church.

Mt. Pleasant May 7, 1854

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Nelly Steart and Ilinowa who had once been before the session again appeared, and requested to be admitted to church fellowship. After examination, Resd. that they be received.

Lucy Vaughn also appeared as a candidate for admission to the church, but as it appeared that she did not live in peace and harmony with her husband, Session Resd. that her case be deferred.

Melissa Wright from Wheelock Church and Susan Daly from Good Water Church were also received.

Thomas Wheeler whose name stands on our church record as a member, having for years neglected his duties and having repeatedly refused to appear before the session, and having indulged in open sin, therefore, Resd. that he be no more considered as a member of this church. Closed with prayer.

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Okishhoya, a member of this church, who had long neglected her duty, appeared before this session, and expressed a wish to be restored to the fellowship of the church, but upon conversing with her, it appeared that she was in the habit of cohabiting with a man who is legally married to another woman, and though she felt that she was doing no wrong in this, as she had lived with the man many years as his wife, yet the session deemed her conduct a breach of the church covenant, and advising her to refuse utterly to cohabit with the man, Resd. that her case be deferred.

William K. Stewart, who had once been before the session, again appeared, and requested to be received to the communion. Session being satisfied with the evidence of his piety, Resd. that he be received.

June 25

Session again met and was opened with prayer. Present as yesterday.

Ilinowa a member came before the session and expressed fears that she had sinned in a difficulty with her husband. In inquiry it appeared that her husband had deserted her, but that she had done nothing worthy of discipline or censure.

Saini a member who neglected her duty, appeared, confessed her fault, professed penitence and was restored.

Lucy Vaughn, again appeared and requested to be received to the communion, but as session were no satisfied with her course of conduct her case was deferred.

Jackson Frazier, a member, was called to an account for his conduct in deserting his wife, without just cause, and he refusing to return to his wife, and provide and dwell with her accordingly to the scripture, Resd. that he be suspended from all the privileges of the church, until he give evidence of penitence and reformation.

Hickman Vaughn, a member, having for a long season, neglected his duties, and been guilty of repeated transgressions of the law of chastity, and constantly refusing to listen to the admonitions of the church, and having repeatedly refused to obey the summons of the session, and there being apparently no hopes of his being reclaimed, Resd. that he be no longer considered as a member of this church.

William S. Potter presented a letter of dismission and recommendation from the Williams College Church with a request to be received as a member of this church. Resd. that his request be granted.

Session met and was opened with prayer.

Jackson Frazier who was suspended for refusing to live with and provide for his family, appeared, and confessed his sin and giving satisfactory evidence of penitence and reformation, Session Resd. that he be restored to the fellowship and confidence of the church.

Joseph P. Folsom presented a letter of dismission from the Darthmouth College Cong. Ch'h. Resd. that he be received.

Mary O'Maley, having been dismassed from the Presbn Ch'h in South Ottawa, Ill. and recommended to this church, Resd. that she be received.

T. B. Turnbull appeared and confessed his sin in drinking, strong drink, and (under its influence) using improper language. Appearing penitent, Resd. that he be restored.
