Robert Arthur Kaul, was the youngest child born to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kaul, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was born May 28, 1932, and went to heaven on February 25, 2002. He graduated Central High School, took off his cap and gown, jumped into a semi-truck and drove all night to Amarillo, Texas, to be at work the next day, as a plumber for his Uncle “Doc’’ Wolfe, in charge of the plumbing details of the construction of a military base there.
Later, his mother called to tell him there was a letter from the draft board; he asked her to read it. It said he was to report for active duty in the United States Army on that date. He sped the miles to arrive at the office. His father had come to bring him toothbrush and other small necessities. Thus, with little warning, he flew from plumbing to a California Boot Camp. His IQ was such the Army offered to send him to Officers’ Training. He refused, telling them he really only wanted to be a plumber! He was made a Military Police and sent to Japan, where he did his duty for the years required. When discharged, he went to Oklahoma City to continue his work as a plumber. Ultimately, he received his full certification as a plumber, expert in air conditioning, in heating, in boiling. With that expertise, he purchased and owned Belle Isle Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning Company and a Boiling Company. He was the owner for forty-four years. A diabetic, his vision began to fail. When he felt it unwise to drive, he sold the beloved company to a longtime employee and faithful friend, Clyde Hamilton. The company has moved onward.
Bob Kaul prepared for retirement as he prepared for all things, carefully, with deliberate thought. He bought a 100 inch screen so he could SEE his beloved OU football games closely enough to hold the coach’s hand as he gave him advice! He built a glorious backyard garden with pools, streams, waterfalls, fountains, and a “kissing bridge.’’ He built a solarium where he could observe the beauty closely. He loved Oklahoma because of the diverse seasons and he rejoiced in the pastel delicacy of spring, the magical majesty of summer, the many splendored changes of fall, the awesome glory of his beloved garden in winter ermine cloak. Bob Kaul’s one other big love was flying. He went to school and achieved licenses up to copilot of jets. He owned four planes of his own. A deeply spiritual man, when he was troubled, he would get in his airplane where he could be close to God. Once, he felt such overwhelming worship that, like David who danced naked before the Lord, Bob Kaul pulled off his shirt before the Lord. “I was covered in divine love,’’ he said of the experience. In the last days of his life, he gave radiant testimony to family, friends, nurses, of his faith in and love of God. He came to consciousness one day with the words, “I’m going to heaven now.’’ Quietly, peacefully, with no warning, at 1:10 pm, on Feb.25 2002, he took his last breath and moved to heaven as he had said. He, who had known so much pain in the last years, is now in a land “prepared for him’’ where Jesus promised there would be no more pain, nor tears, nor confusions, nor blindness, nor bodies that no longer work. We, his family, celebrate his Homegoing where he can see, run, sing, laugh, rejoice in the Larger Life for which he yearned so deeply.
Bob Kaul is survived by his wife, Ruth of Oklahoma City; a son, Dale Kaul, Lagerlechfield, Germany; a grandson, Jason Kaul, Oklahoma City; a granddaughter, Kourtney Kaul, Poteau, Oklahoma; two step-sons, Rev. Bill Vaughn, Aurora, Colorado, Ron Vaughn, Oklahoma City; a step granddaughter, Ashley Vaughn, Austin, Texas.
