The funeral
for a legendary high school football coach has been postponed due to the
inclement weather.
Mike Little passed away on January 28, 2011 at the age of 68. Little
attended Yukon Public Schools growing up and even returned to his
hometown to coach years later.
The church sanctuary barely held the standing-room-only crowd for
Little's memorial service Friday afternoon. Every pew was packed on the
main floor and balcony, as well as the choir seating behind the pulpit.
The service was peaceful, elegant and celebrated the life of a strong,
smart man who impacted the lives of most everyone he met, whether he
knew it or not.
He was able to play basketball at Oklahoma State University under head coach
Hank Iba.
He was hired as an assistant football coach at Central Junior High School
and he was also the first head football coach at Hefner Junior High. He
moved on to coach at Putnam City West High School where he led the Patriots
to three state finals and won the Class 4A State Championship.
He was then the head coach and athletic director of
Putnam City North, where he led the Panther to two state finals and won
the Class 5A State Championship. In 1992, he returned to Yukon as the
head coach and athletic director.
“He was a mentor, a counselor, a role model. He was way more
than my coach, way more than my boss. He was my friend, and I'm honored
to be able to say that.”
Little's funeral was scheduled for Wednesday, February 2, 2011 but it has
now been postponed to Friday, February 4, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Westminster
Presbyterian Church, located at 4400 N. Shartel in Oklahoma City.
