Joy McKay passed away on Friday, April 23, 2004, following a long illness. Joy was born on February 10, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the daughter, and only child, of Roland and Gertrude Hudson.
Joy was preceded in death by her mother and father and husband, Donald (Don) McKay. While in high school, Joy met Don. They became high school sweethearts and were married on July 13, 1946, after Don returned from U.S. Army military service in the South Pacific. They had two children, a daughter Vicki, and a son Brian. Joy and Don moved to Oklahoma City in 1979 from Florida, where they had settled several years earlier. They enjoyed living in Florida, but as Joy often said, they wanted most to be close to and enjoy their grandchildren. Joy was a devoted and loving grandmother who never missed an opportunity to tell someone how very proud she was of her two grandsons, Matthew and Joel. She was a very talented seamstress and enjoyed working at Hancock Fabrics for over 10 years, where everyone she met was greeted with a smile and a helping hand. She was an active member of Our Lords Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City for over twenty-four years. Being involved and helping the congregation was an important part of her life. She was a member of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a regular participant and hostess of the Ladies Wednesday Noon Circle, and the Adults Plus group. She served willingly as the congregation's 'Sunshine Lady' sending cards of sympathy, celebration, and get well wishes to others. She was dutiful in helping put the Parish Life Newsletter together each month and serving as a member of the church Altar Guild. She also enjoyed attending a weekly bible study at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, where she made lasting friends.
A service will be held in her name at Our Lords Lutheran Church, 2900 West Hefner Rd. Oklahoma City, at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, April 29, 2004. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of the Quail Creek Nursing Home for the special care they gave to their mother and grandmother, Joy, and the loving kindness that was provided by the caregivers of Lion Hospice, of Oklahoma City.
