04-09-08 Mom says while she was at the orphanage (St Joseph) she didn't remember any of the sisters passing away. There was a cemetery on the grounds, babies from hospital buried there and some older folks that lived on the orphanage grounds.
Milroy, Mary W. obit says she had a maternity home at 152 Northeast Tenth Street.
Orphanages and other homes for children have long fueled the imaginations and fantasies of young people. In the first book of its kind, award-winning nonfiction author Catherine Reef uncovers the true history of orphanages.
An orphanage might have been located in the heart of an American city, but the children inside lived apart from the world around them. The orphanage became a home, school, and church, and the boys and girls who lived there rarely ventured beyond its confines. The outside community called them asylum children. | needing funds to establish orphanage in OKC |
December 31, 1901 For An Orphanage - The wholesale liquor dealers of the territory have agreed to donate $20,000 for the purpose of building somewhere in the territory an orphans' home. The retail liquor dealers have also agree that they will provide and maintain the orphanage after it has been established. These seems to be a good offer and Oklahoma City ought to secure it.
January 28, 1904 "I am frequently asked," said Mrs. N. E. Bon, police matron, to an Oklahoman reporter yesterday, "if the Waif's Anchorage is connected with the Amie Rescue home. I will say to you, for publication, that it is not. It is under the same management, with the same matron and assistants, but is in a separate building and as much separated as through in a different part of the city. This orphanage will be known as "Amie, the Waif's Anchorage." It is a department of our work that the rapid growth of our rescue work and my own work as police matron have necessitated. Our orphan homes are full and cannot take all kinds of children. It is a month before some children in our city, especially from the slums district, are really fit to be cast into a home of orphan children.
"We are situated so that we can watch them, break them from running away, of chewing, smoking and other bad habits that exist among so many children in this city that are in need of a home.
"We have today fifteen children, some very sweet spirited and bright children, all for adoption at the proper time and to the right parties.
"One thing we insist upon, that people who adopt our children must educate them and bring them up right.
"We find the girls in reformatories usually have very little or no education, and the great majority of the criminals of our land lack a common school education.
"These children have four hours daily in the school room and are also trained to housekeeping, music and everything that will fit them for useful life.
<snip>
"We need groceries, wood and coal, meat and clothing, new and old. Visitors will be cheerfully received by our matron, Mrs. Mathews.
