Dorthea Bunch was born in Rogerville, Indiana, August 16, 1868.
Mr. Bunch made the "run" on horseback when the Cherokee Strip was opened to settlers on September 6, 1893.
He staked a claim eleven and one-half miles southwest of Medford. When Mr. Bunch returned to his family a man jumped his claim. This man had some lumber with him. He started a small building. That evening a friend of Mr. Bunch's tore down the building and hid the lumber. The friend then wrote to Mr. Bunch telling him of the claim jumper. Mr. and Mrs. Bunch came down immediately. They brought with them their livestock, several cows and a few chickens.
Mr. Bunch went back to Kansas for the first harvest. He was there for the first two winters. Mrs. Bunch kept the neighbor's cow and sold butter to help out with living expenses as finances were very low. After the first two winters they progressed rapidly.
