OLD BURYING GROUNDS INSCRIPTIONS
I am informed by W.W. Whitmire that there is an old burying ground near the Salem Church, about eight miles south of Stilwell, Oklahoma, where Huckleberry Downing is buried. He also tells me that Mr. Downing was a very prominent man in national affairs.
I visited the old Ellis Starr farm on Lee's Creek, where there is an old family burying ground badly neglected. It is fast growing up in trees and vines. Some of the inscriptions are:
"Little daughter of J.M. and M.L. Baley, born January 1st, 1872, died January 4, 1872."
"Ellis, son of Ellis and Martha Starr, born November 11, 1881, died April 5, 1882."
"Glesta Akins, born November 1, 1862, died March 21, 1869."
"Susie Starr, daughter of J.M. Starr, born May 21, 1884, died May 7, 1895."
At Geneva Cemetery:
"Emily, wife of Benj. Paden, born July 12, 1816, died February 7, 1884." [sic error- Tombstone says Almiry not Emily.]
"George H.C. Paden, died may 5, 1854, age 22 years and 21 days."
"Benj F. Paden, born August 22, 1835, died October 19, 1922."
"Lucy, wife of Benj. F. Paden, born January 9, 1852, died August 26, 1930."
"J.R. Kincade, born December 22, 1847, died November 21, 1901."
"Martha E., wife of J.E. Dudley, born July 29, 1841, died may 30, 1921."
"Martha Paden, 1848-1920."
"A.T. Paden, March 8, 1837 - June 6, 1907."
"L.J. Presley, 1856-1933."
Transcribers Note: Many of the Padens listed in this cemetery are members of the Benjamin F. and Elmira Miller Paden family. They have been identified when possible in italics.
