The Quapaw Land Allotment
Act of 1893

The land allotment made to members of the Quapaw Tribe was rather unique. When the allotment of lands was begun in the Quapaw Agency Land area in 1887, there was a general disagreement between the government and the Quapaw tribal members. The government was providing for only 80 acres of land be distributed to each tribal member, which would leave almost 57,000 acres unassigned. The tribal leaders were arguing that with the poor quality of the land and considering the excess that was available, then each tribal member should be given 200 acres. The main leader of this Allotment Act was Abner W. Abrams, a successful merchant in Kansas and a member of the Stockbridge tribe which had been adopted into the Quapaw tribe in earlier times.

The tribal officials at this time were Charlie Quapaw, first chief; John Madison, second chief; James Silk, first councilor, George Land, second councilor, and Frank Vallier, interpreter. They were assigned the responsibility of keeping the necessary records and to assign the allotments. To defray the expenses and costs of this undertaking, several white persons were adopted into the tribe upon the payment of a nominal sum. These people were thenceforth referred to in the tribal records as "fullblood white Quapaws".

The proposal of the tribe was ratified  by Congress in 1895, making legal the allotment of the land to 247 members of the tribe.

The following is a list of 215 of those who receive the allotment.

This list was used as a basis for land distribution to eligible Quapaws and only those who moved to Indian Territory appear on it. A large group of Quapaws returned to Arkansas (illegally) and settled in south-central part of state.

Those marked with asterisk by the name denote that the father's family definitely did not come from Arkansas.
