VANTRICE FAMILY CEMETERY

Cemetery on the California Trail
in northern Caddo County

There are only two headstones.
One headstone says: Cyrus Vantrice,
it has a Military Shield on it that says
”CO. H. 125 USC”
The other stone says
“Porter Lee -Son of S.E. & M.D.”
20 May 1901-12 Sep 1913.

No longer visible is a stone that was reported to say “Slave” that was seen by an old timer many many years ago. There is a smashed wire fence surrounding the tombstones.

Ethel Buie, Sandy Miller & Nancy Charlton were intrigued by the stone of Cyrus and decided to do some research. They went to the Caddo County courthouse and found out that Cyrus was an ex-slave that had drew 160 acres of land in the 1901 lottery. Research on the Internet found out that he was in the 125th Infantry Regiment, Company H, Union Kentucky Volunteers, he enlisted 11 May 1865 and mustered out 20 Dec 1867.
He died 23 Feb. 1910 at age 86.
