VINITA, Nov. 1.—Flames that swept an isolated farmhouse cost the
lives of five persons early Monday.
Those who perished were Mrs. Sarah Arvin, 60 years old, her
daughter, Mrs. Opal Herron, 36 years old, and three granddaughters,
Helen, 12, Mary, 10, and Betty, 7. It was apparent all five died
before anyone reached the scene.
James Hawn, a neighbor living three quarters a mile away,
said he heard no outcry after he reached the blazing dwelling. The
roof fell in just as he arrived with W.R. Nigh, a brother of Mrs.
Arvin.
Undertaker Reid Luginbuel said it was apparent the two women
awakened while the house was burning, wrapped blankets about their
heads and tried to get the children out. The position of the bodies
indicated Helen and Mary were struck by a falling flue and
Betty was overcome as she reached a window.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Bluejacket.
