WELCH, Aug. 20—Still living near
the place where he first settled after coming to Indian
territory forty-three years ago, Grandville C. Craig, for
whom Craig county was named, celebrated his seventy-third
birthday anniversary here recently.
Craig is the oldest man in the county in the number of years
of residence here. He came to this district in 1869 from
Warrensburg, Mo., buying a little farm on Neosho river and
building a log cabin for a home. Five years later he traded
for a larger farm and engaged in livestock raising.
Craig moved to Vinita in 1881 to send his children to school.
Since 1912 he has lived in a hotel at Welch. His wife died
several years ago. All his children are married.
