VINITA, Mrs. Maude W. Devine, a Vinita resident for 62
years, died Saturday morning in a local hospital following a
long illness.
The pioneer Vinita woman, born in Greenfield, Iowa, came
here in 1890 where she met her husband, the Late Will
Devine, who was a member of the first white family in Indian
territory. Devine operated a café here several years.
The Devines boarded and roomed a man who put in the first
block of pavement on Vinita’s Main street in 1905. Two men
who helped install the first natural gas line here in 1907
also stayed at the Devines.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Grace DeWitt, Salina,
Kan.; one son, John W. Devine, Corpus Christi, Texas; 14
grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Methodist
church. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery here.
