VINITA, Jan. 29.—Joe Raymond Lawson, 31, who was seriously
injured on Okinawa during World war II, died Wednesday night
in a local hospital following a long illness.
Born here Jan. 23, 1922, he was a lifetime resident of
Vinita. He served in four island invasions as a member of
the Fourth marine corps. Later, as a member of the Sixth
marine corps, he was wounded April 22, 1945, during the
battle of Okinawa. He was permanently injured.
While at Birmingham hospital, Van Nuys, Calif., he was a
member of the nation’s first wheelchair basketball team.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Lawson, of
the home in Vinita; three sisters, Mrs. N____ McN____,
Vinita; Mrs. Arliss Griffin of Cleora, and Mrs. ___ Archer,
Vinita; four brothers, H.A. Lawson of P___, Kan.; George
Lawson of the home, ___weth Lawson ____ Kan. ____ B__b
Lawson of the home, and his ____ mother, Mrs. Clara Porturf,
Vinita.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Burkhalter
Memorial chapel. Burial will be in the ___ cemetery.
