VINITA, Sept. 1—Charges of murder were filed here Wednesday
afternoon against Robert Hendricks, 64, who has been held
since Saturday, in connection with the slaying of Ream
Payton, 54, Craig county cattleman.
Hendricks was back in the county jail Wednesday after having
been released from the hospital late Tuesday where he was
treated for self inflicted wounds in an attempt at suicide.
He left a signed statement in which he assumed all
responsibility for the Payton death.
Payton, whose body was found in a field near here, had not
been seen for several days after he had cashed a $2,200
check in a Vinita bank. There was no money in his pockets
when his body was discovered. Officers first thought he had
been shot in the back of the head but an autopsy revealed he
had been beaten to death.
