BIG REAL ESTATE DEAL

Monday, when Jay Donaldson paid L.N. (Neal) Cothern $8000 for the above building and the residence and eight lots, he made the biggest real estate deal that was ever pulled off in Depew.
This fine two story building was bought by Mr. Cothern a few years ago, before the H.C.L. was aboard in the land and while Mr. Cothern did not lose anything in the deal Mr. Donaldson secured one of the best bargains in real estate that could be made in this burg.
At present the P & H Hardware store have a lease on the lower floor which they are using for a store room. When their lease expires the Donaldson Brothers will occupy the lower floor with a mammoth stock of general merchandise to accomodate their fast growing trade. It will make one of the best store buildings in town.
Mr. Donaldson did not own the residence very long, when he transfered the ownership to H.G. Merryman, of the First State Bank. Mr. Merryman will probably occupy the residence in a short time.
Mr. Donaldson’s friends are congratulating him on his buy, which proves his faith in "coming Depew."
New Man Invests in Depew Property
Tuesday D.S. Vandersall sold his two lots and restaurant and bakery building on West Main Street to our new baker, Mr. Crosswhite.
Mr. Crosswhite has been in Depew about a month and we judge that he likes the place, at any rate the folks are patronizing his bakery and keeping him busy about two shifts per day.
Mr. Atteberry will continue his restaurant in the building as he has eight months longer on his lease.

Since Atteberrys opened a restaurant in this building some four months ago they have built up a nice trade and have a clean place where a fellow can bet the best the market affords at all times.
A peculiar circumstance in connection with making out the papers in the deal-Mr. Crosswhite had sub-leased the bakery from Elick Atteberry and buying the place, his position has changed a sub-lessee to landlord and he will have to pay himself hereafter. We know a fellow not far from town who is his own father-in-law and one of his brothers is his son-in-law and he married his brother’s mother-in-law.
Oil News
The Wilcox people have a rig on the ground in Section 34, 16, 8, on the Dr. Schraner land. The rig is about one mile west of the rig on the Kelly land just east of the poor farm.
We have it upon authority that the Wilcox Oil Company have made a location and will immediately haul a rig out to Section 10, 15, 8, which is about two miles east of Depew.
Our New Preacher
Sunday morning and evening Rev. Broome, from Bristow, filled the pulpit at the M.E. Church. He will probably get the appointment for full time and move his family here. He is a forceful speaker and the folks who were absent from church (and there were a lot of them) Sunday missed a treat.
Rev. Broome is a brother-in-law of Rev. Peak.

The editor of the Independent was shocked Tuesday and say by the way it requires quite a little to shock us too. A real honest-to-goodness lady accosted us on the street and ask us if we knew where she could buy some cigarettes-yes cigarettes. We stuttered and stammered for what seemed to us an age and when we got back on our feet we directed the lady to a place where she might purchase a small bundle of the weed. She was accompanied by a couple of ladies in a fine car-and they were fine looking ladies too, and we know a lady when we see one. But what got our goat was what in the world she wanted with those cigarettes.

W.F. Parshall has been having a lot of cement walks put in around his fine new bungalow.
