The Box Supper and Dance
There was a large crowd out Saturday night for the box supper and dance given to raise money to equip the ball team. There were but about half dozen boxes which brought about twenty dollars. A fine cake baked and donated for the occasion by Mr. Crosswhite was the prize offered for the most popular young lady. Mrs. Frank Shawver and Miss Vernal Sexton were nominated, Miss Sexton winning by a few votes. It was hard to stir up any enthusiasm in the contest the total votes were less than 500, less than what the cake was really worth.
The dance was well patronized and the proceeds left for the ball team were around $40.00.

To Meet Sunday Afternoon
We understand that all the ball enthusiasts are to meet in town Sunday afternoon and at that time a team will be selected and an organization perfected.
All ball players are urgently requested to see R.L. Plinkington as to the arrangements.

The gas line on west Main street was lowered this week. It had gradually grown out of the ground and it was necessary to plant it deeper so the street could be put into shape for the chat.

Struck Gas at 1040 Feet
A Ten Million gasser was brought in on the Utter & Roberts 80 this morning.
This will be great news to the many friends of Ray Utter and Opp Roberts. There is no doubt but what a good oil well will be found under this heavy gas basin.
We have noticed for a long time that Ray and Opp always brought a good bunch of "gas" with them when they came to town and now the mystery is solved. We rejoice with them in their good luck.

Getting Fixed For The Cotton Season
Depew will be one of the best places to sell your crop of 1920 cotton and this is no joke.
Webb Arrowood, Manager of the West Gin is superintending the spending of more than $4,000 on the gin property. He has put in a new engine and moved the boiler, put in an automatic packer and new cleaner. Built an additional storage room for both cotton and cotton seed. The gin will be practically the same as a new gin as new stands were put in last year.
Epps & Lee have considerable material on the ground for their new gin, which, we understand, is brand new from the factory. Work is now being done on the site and they will be ready for the cotton season in plenty of time.
Seth Barrett was here from Coyle Saturday and completed the deal for the six lots in block 21 and will start the erection of a fire-proof gin building within a few days. His material has been loaded on the cars and is expected to arrive soon.
The Star Gin was completely overhauled last year and will be handled again this year by the old reliable "Laddie" Sexton.
With four cotton gins instead of two why shouldn’t Depew be in for her share of the cotton.

Three boys were arrested this morning and brought before Judge East, charged with shooting at a brakeman on the Frisco. Two of them were bound over to the County Court and taken to jail at Sapulpa and the other one is doing time on the streets. They were unknown to any of our folks and refused to tell their names or where they hailed from.
-----
George Robers, one of the best farmers in the west side of the county, was in Depew a few hours Monday. While here he was a pleasant caller at the Independent office. At one time he was an efficient marshal of the town of Stroud, when it required a good man to hold down the job.
