Bryan Carter Killed
Floyd Carter returned Tuesday from Shrievesport, La., where he
was called by the death of his brother, Bryan Carter.
From what we could learn Bryan was walking the pipe line for the
Standard Oil Company. His route taking him near a moonshine distillery
where he had stopped for a few minutes. Five officers appeared
to raid the place, and the owner fled to the swamps, the officers
firing on Bryan. He died a few hours later in a hospital.
Bryan Carter was well known in Depew, his father, G. H. Carter
living out north of town for several years. A sister, Mrs. Frank
Shawver living northwest of town three miles. He also has two
sisters and a brother living at Oklahoma City.
We understand he was buried at Shrievesport.
The friends of the family mourn with them in the loss of the son
and brother.

Schiller-McElroy
Married Saturday September 18th, Lawrence Schiller and Miss Martha
McElroy.
Lawrence is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Schiller and one of
our industrious young men. He was one of the boys who helped to
bring the Kaiser’s bacon to America. Since returning from overseas
he has been employed in the oil fields.
Miss McElroy is the popular lady clerk at the Harrington-Pettegrew
store and has won a host of friends by her charming manner.
The Independent joins with their many friends in wishing them
all the happiness possible for them to corral.

More About Our Gasoline Well
The Prairie well two miles south of Depew has been on the war
path this week. It seems like the durasamus that holds the dingaramus
that holds the gas down broke loose under the heavy pressure scattering
gasoline all over the derrick.
The flow of gas gets stronger every day and there is fear that
it will break loose and become uncontrollable. People well acquainted
with the actions of this well say that it soon will be turning
out more gasoline than a small refinery, when the weather gets
cooler.

Banker C. N. Lee has had a sidewalk put down in front of his new
residence. His home is about completed and is about the finest
on "Bankers

Row" and adds greatly to the beauty of that
part of town.

Next President to be in Oklahoma City October 9th
We received a letter from Jake Hamon a few days ago stating that
Senator Harding, the next President, would be in Oklahoma City
October 9th. There will be a large gathering of newspaper men
and we expect to have an opportunity to give him some pointers
on how to run this big country after March 4th.

Harding’s Newspaper Creed
Remember there are two sides to every question. Get them both.
Be truthful. Get the facts.
Mistakes are inevitable, but strive for accuracy. I would rather
have one story exactly right than a hundred half wrong.
Be decent, be fair, be generous.
Boost-don’t knock.
There’s good in everybody. Bring out the good in everybody and
never needlessly hurt the feelings of anybody.
In reporting a political gathering, give the facts; tell the story
as it is, not as you would like to have it. Treat all parties
alike.
If there’s any politics to be played, we will play it in our Editorial
Columns.
Treat all religious matters reverently.
If it can possibly be avoided, never print ignominity to an innocent
man or child in telling of misdeeds or misfortunes of a relative.
Don’t wait to be asked, but do it without the asking, and, above
all, be clean and never let a dirty word or suggestive story get
into type.
I want this paper so conducted that it can go into any home without
destroying the innocence of any child.

Mrs. Annie Allen has purchased the Albert Quandel residence in
the south west part of town and will move into it in a few days.
Willie Quandel is building a fine four room bungalow in the First
addition on his ten lots. When the house is completed he will
move into it and stop paying rent.

J. F. Wilbank, of Seminole City, will be here Sunday and will
open a singing school Monday night. He is a music writer of some
note and comes highly recommended.
