Loses Arm in Cotton Gin
Wednesday afternoon about three o’clock, Frank Staples, known
to his many friends as "Red", had the misfortune to
get his right arm caught in the gin saws at the Barrett gin. He
jerked his arm out as quickly as possible but the saws had cut
through his hand and arm almost to the elbow. He started to the
Doctor’s office and Ted McFarland, who also works in the same
gin saw him and assisted by Curt Thompson they took him to Doctor
Coppedge’s office. It was found necessary to amputate his arm
just below the elbow. He had been working at the gin but a day
or so.
From what we can learn he was told by the ginner to clean the
saws in one of the stands where they were running some wet cotton
through. The breasts or fenders were held up off the saws with
a board. He had a stick cleaning the saws when the ginner came
by striking the stick which held up the breast with his foot letting
the breast fall on his hand, and the saws. His arm was jerked
into the saws before he could realize it.
He was taken to his father’s home where he is resting as easy
as could be expected. "Red" is a favorite among the
younger set of men.

Might as well begin to get into the habit of calling W. R. (Doc)
Martin "Judge." He was recently elected to the office
of Township Justice without any opposition. The other newly elected
members of the Township board are Frank Bollinger, W. H. Wilson,
John H. Fox and George Stark. Stark being elected Constable.

The Donaldson Brothers have their plate glass at last. Their entire
front was blown out last April and since that time they have been
handicapped by reason of having their light cut off. The glass
got as far as the depot last spring and over on a box and broke
every plate.

Depew will have a show next week. A new restaurant will also open
up and maybe a moving picture show.
