Lyman F. Beard Pioneer Sapulpa Dairyman is Dead Mr. Beard was born at Fredonia, Kans., and came to Oklahoma in 1890 settling at Oklahoma City. At the out break of the Spanish-American war he enlisted from Shawnee and became a corporal in Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. He served in this capacity some time and he and Roosevelt became warm friends. In 1900 he and Mrs. Beard were married in Shawnee. Later they moved to Madill where Roosevelt, who by then had become president of the U.S. remembered his corporal by appointing him postmaster at Madill. In 1913 the family moved to Sapulpa living for a short time in the city and then moving to the dairy farm east of the city which he operated until ill health caused him to retire but still lived on the farm. Lyman F. Beard, 68, one of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, and pioneer Sapulpa dairyman, died at noon today after a long illness. Although sick for many months death came suddenly supposedly from a sudden heart attack. Tentative funeral arrangements have been made for Monday, but subject to the arrival of relatives from a distance. Mr. Beard is survived by his widow and six daughters and one son. The son, Frank, lives at Ponca City. One daughter, Mrs. George Wills, lives in Tulsa, Mrs. Harry Pickett in Pensacola, Fla., Mrs. Earl Bridwell in Oklahoma City, Mrs. Paul Tuggles in Wichita, Elinor, who is a student at A. and M. college at Stillwater, and Margerie a student in the Sapulpa Junior college. One son, Theodore, died a few years ago. He is also survived by two brothers, John of Ada, and O. L. of Madill and two sisters who live in California. During his life here he has taken an active interest in politics and was a tireless worker for the republican party. He was an active member of the Methodist church and attended services whenever possible. The Landrith Funeral Home is in charge of funeral plans.
