D. H. Buffington, Sapulpa Pioneer Taken By Death
Funeral For Pioneer Sapulpa Mortician Will Be Held On Thursday Afternoon.

D. H. (Bert) Buffington, city commissioner, pioneer settler and Sapulpa’s dean of undertakers died last night at 8:30 o’clock of pneumonia following a short illness of asthma and influenza. He was 67 years old.

Mr. Buffington was rushed to the hospital yesterday but treatment proved futile.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Miss Ruth Buffington, of the home address on South Oak and one brother John W. Buffington of Mounds.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the First Methodist church with Rev. Whitworth in charge. Burial will be made in the Sapulpa Cemetery.

Buffington came to Sapulpa in 1897 and has been an active mortician in this community since that date. He was born in Tennessee.

He was a Mason, a member of the Odd Fellows, past commander of the Knights Templars and at the time of his death was Treasurer.

Mr. Buffinton is a past president of the Izaac Walton League and was state president of the Oklahoma Funeral directors in 1910.

He has taken an active part in civic and municipal matters in this city for the past 45 years.

While pall bearers had not been selected today members of the family said in addition to these the young men who had served their mortician would assist at the services.

His body was taken to his own funeral home.

D. H. Buffington Rites Are Held

Funeral services were held for D. H. Buffington, pioneer Sapulpa undertaker yesterday afternoon at 2:30 at the First Methodist church with Rev. J. O. Whitworth and Rev. C. D. Todd in charge. Funeral arrangement directions were supervised by Kenneth Harrison, Jeff Lugenbuel, Vinita: Donald Petering, Muskogee, all funeral home directors and Walton Bell, state funeral inspector of Tulsa, all of whom were former apprentices with Mr. Buffington.

Pall Bearers at the services were members of the Knights Templars. Women of the Eastern Star assisted with the flowers.

Mr. Buffington died late Monday of pneumonia after a short illness.

He is survived by his widow Mrs. Elizabeth Buffington and a daughter Ruth.
