MYRON CUNNINGHAM

GAINESVILLE, FLA. — Former Sapulpan Myron A. Cunningham, 79, of Gainesville died June 19 at Alachua General Hospital.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Gainesville.

Cunningham graduated from Sapulpa High School in 1926. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Oklahoma State University in 1931, a master’s degree from OSU in 1940 and a doctorate degree from Northwestern University in 1952.

During his career as an educator, Cunningham was regarded as a pioneer in special education in Florida. He joined the University of Florida College of Education faculty in 1953.

His professional career included serving as a teacher, principal and superintendent of Depew from 1931 to 1944, as well as elementary principal for Fort Smith, Ark.; supervisor for elementary education for the Arkansas State Department of Education, director of curriculum in Abilene, Texas; associate professor of education at the University of Florida; and professor of education at the University of Florida and chairman of the special education section.

In 1975, he retired as a full professor and was named professor emeritus at the University of Florida.

He served on the board of directors of the Alachua County Association for Retarded Children for more than 15 years and was active in the Council for Exceptional Children. He was a former vice president of the Association for Childhood Education International and served as president of the Florida Higher Education Association in 1971-72. He also served on the Alachua County Gifted children’s Committee, the Mental Health Association and the Florida Association for the Gifted.

Mr. Cunningham was a member of the Florida Education Association, the National Education Association, the Association for Childhood Education International, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, the Council for Exceptional Children, Division on Mental Retardation, Association for the Gifted, American Association on Mental Deficiency, American Association of University Professors and the Florida Higher Education Association.

After his death, a donation was made to the M. H. Bartlett Scholarship Fund in his memory. The Scholarship fund is [be] used to financially aid students entering the medical field.

Survivors include brother Lynn Cunningham of Sapulpa.

In lieu of other remembrances the family suggest donations to a favorite charity.
