James "Jim" Lewis DeWitt, 80 passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. DeWitt was born in Tulsa on Sept. 18, 1921 and moved to Meridian, Miss. during his youth before entering the U.S. Army in 1942.

Mr. DeWitt retired from the U.S. Army with more than 20 years of service as a sergeant first class. He also devoted 10 years of federal service as a Department of Defense civilian at Fort Bliss, Texas.

During his tenure with the U.S. military, Mr. DeWitt served in World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, World War II Occupation Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with seven Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal 4th Award and the National Defense Service Medal.

After his retirement from the government Mr. DeWitt was employed by the Western Technical Institute of El Paso, Texas, where he retired in 1991 as an automotive technical instructor.

Mr. DeWitt was a long-time resident of El Paso, Texas, before he retired and then moved to Sheridan, Ark. in 1994. He accepted Christ in January 1959 at the Calvery Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Ark.
Mr. DeWitt is preceded in death by his father and mother, Lewis and Norma DeWitt, and brother and sister, Clyde and Lucille DeWitt of Meridan.

Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Dorothy DeWitt of Sheridan; his son, George, and daughter-in-law, Rachel DeWitt of El Paso, Texas; his daughter, Cyndi DeWitt of Hensley, Ark.; three grandchildren, Nicole and Chad Stewart of Henley, Ark. and Cory James DeWitt of El Paso, Texas; and many relatives in the surrounding communities of Tulsa and Meridian.

Mr. DeWitt will always be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and papaw. Jim will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who all know that Jim has passed on to a much better place where he is free of pain, where he can now enjoy the things he loved to do.

Mr. DeWitt will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery in North Little Rock, Ark. at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2002.
