Melvin R. Harkins

Melvin R. Harkins passed away Saturday, May 10, 2003 at the age of 85.

He was born Dec. 3, 1917 to Andy and Anna Harkins. He was married to Delia Shackelford for 57 years. They were joined together on July 31, 1946.

Mr. Harkins was a World War II veteran. He was in the 242nd Rainbow Division and recipient of the Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and a distinguished unit badge.

He was also a member of the Carpenters Union and the American Legion. On Jan. 7, 1957 he became a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 170. After retirement he became an avid gardener.

Mr. Harkins was survived by his wife Delia Harkins, three daughters, Deannie Welch and her husband Ron Welch, Kathy Ernst, and Dorothy Johnson; grandchildren Traci Smith, Kelly Armstrong and husband Dave Armstrong, Joey Baily and husband Allen Baily, Dooner Bookout and wife Shelly Bookout, and Melissa Webb and husband Dustin Webb; his aunt Bertha Bumpus; brothers Ralph Harkins, of Barstow, Calif., and Stanley Harkins, of Kingman, Ariz.; 14 great-grandchildren and 25 nieces and nephews. 

Mr. Harkins was preceded in death by his father, Andy Harkins; mother, Anna Harkins; brothers Kenneth Harkins, Otto Harkins and George Harkins; his sister, Consuello Chilcoat; son-in-law Tommy Ernst; and a great-grandchild Jessica Lamont.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at Smith Funeral Home. Graveside will follow at Green Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and a good friend to all. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
