STACY MOORE HOWARD

Stacy Moore Howard died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Tulsa at the age of 88. He was born Sep 23, 1911 in Spiro to Jay Franklin Howard and Birdie DILLARD Howard.

He had lived in Creek County most all of his life and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Stacy married Opal SHORT on Oct 24, 1936 in Depew.

He was Marshal in Depew from 1945 until his retirement in 1991, but remained a special bonded deputy for the State of Oklahoma, Creek County. He was an active member of the Sheriff and Peace Officers Association of Oklahoma and a member of the International Police Hall of Fame Foundation, the National Association of Chiefs of Police, State of Oklahoma Commission for Municipal Clerks, Treasurers and Finance Officers and a retired member of the Oklahoma State Firefighter’s Association.

He was appointed and commissioned honorary colonel of the governor’s staff by then Gov. of the State of Oklahoma, J. Howard Edmondson, and was one of the first commissioned peace officers within the State of Oklahoma, commissioned by K. O. Rayburn in 1967.

"You can never get so smart or so tough that you can do it all yourself," Stacy once said, "You’ve got to have family and friends."

No man can enforce the law by himself, he always acknowledged. "You can’t do it yourself. A lot of guys think just because you strap that gun on that you can be a dictator, but you can’t," he said.

Stacy is survived by his wife, Opal, of the home, three sons, J. F. Howard and Bobby Howard, both of Depew, and John Howard of Sapulpa, one daughter, Suda Howard of New Orleans, LA; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Jess Howard, Oran Howard, Charles Howard, Elmer Howard and Jack Howard; one sister, Nonearl WITCHER; and one grandson, Michael Howard.

Graveside services will be at 2 pm Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Oakdale Cemetery in Depew. Quint Miller and Clyde Mcquire will official.

Schumacher Funeral Home of Bristow is in charge of arrangements.
