Death Claims Pioneer Woman Resident Here
Mrs. G. C. Hughes after heart attack yesterday, funeral services tomorrow.
Mrs. Alice Virginia Hughes -- age 86, widow of the late Gordon C. Hughes
succumbed to a heart attack at 12:30 o’clock at her home at 1002 East Hobson
Avenue.
Her daughters, Mrs. H. H. Burns and Mrs. R. E. L. Majors was at her side when
the end came. Although a physician was summoned he was unable to revive her. In
declining health for the past several months, Mrs. Hughes died within a short
time after she was stricken. She never regained consciousness after she swooned
into her fatal illness. Mrs. Hughes suffered a slight stroke of paralysis a few
months back.
Her husband preceded her in death 18 years ago. He is buried in the Sapulpa
Cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons, Mrs. R. E. L. Majors, Mrs. H.
H. Burns and Mrs. Ruth M. Shumard. The sons are Huber Hughes, County Clerk and
Carl Hughes, Assistant Justice of the State Supreme Court at Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma.
Seventeen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren also survive.
One son and a daughter preceded Mrs. Hughes in death also. They are the former
Judge Ernest B. Hughes, who died in 1932. A daughter Gertrude, who died in 1909.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the First
Methodist church, south with the Rev. J. Frank Graham officiating. Buffington
Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
Burial will be made in the family lot at the Sapulpa Cemetery. The body will be
moved to the family home tomorrow morning at 9:30 o*clock. Friends may call
between this and the hour the funeral cortege leaves for the church.
Pallbearers are members of the board of stewards of the church of which the
senior Hughes was president for many years. They will be C. J. Davenport, W. B.
Key, John Doremus, Ben Harton, Clyde Jones And Joe Fulp.
Mrs. Hughes was born April 17, 1851 in Mercer County, Virginia, daughter of
James and Sally Houchins. She was educated in private schools. She married
Gordon C. on April 17, 1872. Mrs. Hughes was one of the oldest surviving pioneer
women of this community. She came with her husband to Sapulpa in territorial
days on Jan. 13, 1899.

Her husband came here to accept a post as principal of the Euchee Indian
Mission.
Throughout the years Mrs. Hughes has been active in church and charity work. She
has played an active part in early civic work. She was one of the few members of
the First Methodist Church, South, who has served under every pastor since the
organization of this congregation in Sapulpa. Mrs. Hughes was the oldest member
of the Weslyn Bible class.
When she and her husband came to Sapulpa there were less than 100 residents
here. She has lived at the family residence at 1002 East Hobson since its
construction in 1907.
Her death brings to a close the generation into which she was born. No other
members survive on either side.
For a number of years, Mrs. Hughes joined her husband in his early day school
teaching. Hughes came here as an educator and was active in this capacity for
years as well as in early day developments of this city.
Mrs. Hughes' membership in this organization of the United Daughters of the
Confederacy is one of the earliest in the local chapter.
Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Virginia Hughes, 86, pioneer Sapulpa resident
who succumbed to a heart attack Sunday afternoon at her home, 1002 East Hobson
avenue, were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the First Methodist church, South,
with Rev. J. Frank Graham conducting.
Suffering from a slight stroke of paralysis for some time prior to the heart
attack, Mrs. Hughes died almost immediately after she was stricken.
Mrs. Hughes was the widow of the late Gordon C. Hughes and father of the late
Judge Earnest B. Hughes. Coming to Sapulpa in 1899 with her husband who headed
the Euchee Indian mission. Mrs. Hughes was very active on church, social and
charity work throughout the years.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons. Mrs. R. E. L. Majors and Mrs.
H. H. Burns and Mrs. Rush M. Shumard are the daughters. The sons are Huber
Hughes, county clerk and Carl Hughes, assistant state supreme court justice. She
is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Burial was made in the family lot at the Sapulpa Cemetery with Buffington
funeral directors in charge.
