Sapulpan Killed in Sand Springs Collision

SAND SPRINGS — A rural Sapulpa man was killed and his brother critically injured in a two-vehicle accident west of Sand Springs Friday, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a 1978 Plymouth station wagon driven by John D. Lawrence, 52, Route 4, was disabled in the eastbound land of 41st Street at Cyote Trail when it was struck from behind by a 1982 Pontiac Bonneville driven by Donald Lee Whitesel, 49, Tulsa around 9:50 pm.

Lawrence and his brother Carrol D. Lawrence, 58, were standing at the rear of the station wagon attempting to repair the vehicle when they were struck by Whitesel’s auto, troopers said.

John Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene. Carrol Lawrence was flown by Life Flight to Saint Francis Hospital.

Whitesel was taken by EMSA to Saint John Medical Center where he is being treated for head injuries.

No citations have been issued, but authorities are still reviewing the case, officials said.
