Edward W. Mackensen, 74, of Bristow, former publisher of the Bristow News-Record and Record-Citizen, died Oct. 10, 1995 in a Tulsa hospital.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Bristow's First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jeffery Francis will officiate. Interment will be in Magnolia Memorial Gardens in Bristow with Schumacher Funeral Home of Bristow in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Margie, of Bristow.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Bristow Library or First Presbyterian Church.

Mackensen was born Aug. 6, 1921 in Fort Smith, AR. He attended public schools in Henryetta, Wewoka, McAlester and Haileyville and graduated from Durant High School, where he was student body and student council president and a member of the National Honor Society.

He attended the University of Oklahoma, Southeastern Stat University, Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. He earned a BA degree from OU and a juris doctorate from the University of Tulsa.

While in college, he edited The Southeastern college paper and was editor of The Covered Wagon, a humor magazine at OU.

Mackensen served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was a veteran of the Normandy invasion. He earned four Bronze Stars serving in both Bradley's First Army and Patton's Third Army in Europe.

Following the war, he remained active in the U. S. Army Reserves rising to the rank of colonel, serving in the 95th Army Reserve Division. He was an instructor and director of the Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, KS as well as with the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C.

He completed his military career as a logistician, one of less than 100 in the U. S. Army at that time.

Mackensen ran for Congress from the 4th District in 1964 against the late Tom Steed and was defeated. He ran for state representative in 1974 and again was defeated.

Mackensen was past commander of the Bristow Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, as well as a past president of the Bristow Rotary Club. He was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Bristow Golf and Country Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Bristow Sportsman Club, Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and taught the high school Sunday School class.
