Earltown, March 3 - There passed away on
February 10 at the Royal Alexander Hospital, Edmonton, Alberta,
Miss Catherine MacKAY, a daughter of the late Robert MacKAY of
Earltown and Mrs. Robert MacKAY formerly of Earltown, now of
Pictou. As a young girl Miss MacKAY went west where she attended
Normal School in Camrose, Alberta. After teaching in rural
points in that province she took a course in Journalism at the
University of Missouri from which she graduated with the degree
of Bachelor of Journalism. Returning to her native province she
attended business College in Halifax and subsequently took a
position on the staff of a daily paper in that city. Later she
taught commercial subjects in New Glasgow and Sydney. In 1922
she went to Edmonton, Alberta, and joined the MacDOUGALL
Commercial High School staff and until forced to retire a few
months ago, was in charge of the accelerated one year class from
which several hundred students have graduated. She was one of
the oldest teachers in point of service on the Edmonton Public
School Staff. Wherever she labored she displayed great talent
and leadership and was always an inspiration for good to all
with whom she came in contact. She was held in high esteem by
fellow teachers and students alike.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday,
February 13 from the Howard and MacBride Funeral Home. It was
attended by members of the Commercial High School Staff and many
of Miss MacKAY's former students, as well as many Edmonton
friends. Relatives attending included her sister Mrs. John
CASEY, of Norman, Oklahoma, her brother Andrew MacKAY of Hanna,
Alberta and a nephew, Douglas MacKAY of Earltown, Nova Scotia,
all of whom were able to be with her during the latter part of
her illness. Rev. Angus MacQUEEN, pastor of Robertson United
Church of which Miss MacKAY was a faithful member, conducted the
service. He based his message on her favorite passage of
Scripture, 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13, whose keynote is charity
and which so well symbolized the life ! of Miss MacKAY who was
so charitable in her relations with others. He paid tribute to
her fine Christian character. The Robertson Choir sang, "Nearer
My God to Thee" and "Lead Kindly Light". Pall bearers were
friends of the deceased Messrs. PAGE, HOLLINGWORTH, MacDONALD
and DICKSON. By request there were no flowers and she was laid
to rest in the perpetual care section of the Edmonton City
Cemetery.
Miss MacKAY was predeceased by her
father, and three brothers, John R. and Joseph of Earltown and
Hugh of Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
She is survived by her aged mother, a
sister Mary, Mrs. John CASEY of Norman, Oklahoma, a brother
Andrew MacKAY of Hanna, Alberta. Also surviving are several
nieces and nephews who mourn the loss of a devoted aunt.
Although the greater part of Miss MacKAY's life was spent away
from Earltown, yet she returned to spend many vacations with
relatives here and in Pictou where she will be greatly missed
and will henceforth be a beautiful memory in the minds of all
who had privilege of her acquaintance.
